Digital Storytelling in Confirmation Catechesis

Possibilities, Challenges, and Perspectives

Abstract

This article explores the opportunities and limitations of digital storytelling within Confirmation catechesis. In the context of digitalisation and a culture of digitality, storytelling—long a key element in religious education—is undergoing change. Digital storytelling goes beyond mere narration using digital tools; both its met-hods and technologies carry an embedded “more”. In digital storytelling, narration intersects with fields such as advertising, gaming, and social media. This contribu-tion therefore focuses on the overlap between these areas and the guiding principles embedded within them. From the perspective of transformative education aimed at fostering freedom, and in line with a religious education approach sensitive to ambiguity, the article reflects on the potentials and challenges of digital narration in Confirmation catechesis. Digital storytelling emerges as a means to facilitate biographically rooted learning processes and to enable narrative encounters betwe-en young people and the faith community. Catechists are thus also called to heighten their awareness of the mediatization of religious communication and education.
